Having Difficult Conversations with Teens

“Your kids will talk to you about things you talk to them about. Your kids won’t talk to you about things you don’t talk to them about.”

Craig Gross

Are you struggling to talk to your teen about heavy or scary topics? You’re not alone. Many parents feel unequipped to approach subjects like sex, bullying, or mental health, but research shows that your kids genuinely find these conversations helpful. The key is to stop seeing these sensitive subjects as one-and-done talks and start thinking about them as The One Conversation—a continuous, lifelong dialogue that begins when they’re young and evolves as they grow.

This approach strengthens your connection and ensures you remain their primary influence. To successfully navigate this lifelong dialogue, you need to commit to building a strong relationship, approaching them with genuine openness, and being proactive rather than reactive. By learning to go side-by-side with your teen (literally and figuratively), managing your expectations, and avoiding assumptions, you can intentionally become the authoritative voice and safe space your child needs for every challenging topic.
