Youth ministry often calls leaders to support and inform parents and key adults in the lives of teens. Recently, St. Michael the Archangel hosted a highly impactful “Parent Night” focused on mental health, featuring a panel of experts. Below, you’ll find the template for the event, the questions posed to the panel, and the evening’s format.
Having led countless parent nights during my time in youth and parish ministry, I can confidently say this was one of the most effective I’ve ever experienced.
If you’re seeking a meaningful way to engage parents and foster healthy conversations around mental health, this event provides an excellent model for your parish.

Get your panelist. The key here is to get people outside of your parish. A good mixture of counselors who work with youth and/or young adults, one or two doctors of psychology from local institutions, and someone to represent the Church.
Plan your questions. Make sure to think the questions you want your panelist to answer and communicate the questions to the panelist at least 2 weeks in advance. The questions to should be divided up specifically for each panelist.
Advertise your night. Starting waaaay in advance, advertise your night to the parents on the parish. Recommendation, start advertising the night at least one month in advance. If the night is important, act like it and don’t wait until the last minute to communicate about it.
